Chapter 4: Naming the Divisions

What's special about this deal?
See the last page of this chapter for the answer.

(Expert players: please read the note at the bottom of this page.)

When you are dealt four Pai Gow tiles, your task is to divide those tiles into two hands, a high hand and a low hand. In order to play well, you need to know the best way to divide your tiles.

In this chapter, Naming the Divisions, you will learn to recognize the possible ways that you can divide your tiles.

In the following chapter, Chapter 5, The Traditional Strategy, you will learn to select the correct way to divide and play your tiles.

Before reading this chapter, you should read Chapter 3, Valuing the Hands. Beginning Pai Gow players should now proceed to the next page.

Note for experts

This chapter introduces a simple terminology that PaiGow.com uses in describing the playing strategies. You will need to know that terminology in order to understand Chapter 5's description of the traditional strategy and Chapter 11's description of the Denenberg Strategy.

If you are already an experienced Pai Gow player, you will easily understand a much briefer version of this chapter, which will quickly show you the terminology. Go to the abbreviated version of Chapter 4, Naming the Divisions.
